LIVE AB Scoring System

Every Rep Has a Result.

LIVE AB scoring makes the competition visible for hitters, pitchers, coaches, teammates, and families—whether the session is scored with printed scorecards or through The Dugout.

Real Reps. Real Scoring. Real Recognition.

Choose The Scoring System

Two scoring systems. Never interchangeable.

LIVE AB scores private practice and official competition differently. Always know which system you are running.

Private Team Use

Team Kit Practice Scoring

Used by coaches, teams, instructors, parents, academies, and facilities running private sessions with the LIVE AB Team Kit.

The same practice-scoring system may be used on printed scorecards or through The Dugout when the session is configured as a Team Kit practice session.

Managed And Event Use

Official LIVE AB Scoring

Used for applicable managed LIVE AB sessions, approved partner programs, and official LIVE AB events.

Official scoring may vary by program, event, competition type, or published scoring version.

Important: Team Kit practice results do not automatically become official LIVE AB event results or permanent rankings.

Team Kit Scoring Rules

  1. 01Score every official competitive AB.
  2. 02Each hitter receives one pre-AB bunt attempt.
  3. 03A successful bunt earns the hitter +2.
  4. 04The bunt pitch counts toward pitcher workload.
  5. 05The bunt pitch does not begin the competitive count.
  6. 06The first competitive pitch determines First-Pitch Strike.
  7. 07A called strike, swinging strike, foul ball, or qualifying first-pitch strike event earns the pitcher +2.
  8. 08Use one terminal hitter outcome per AB.
  9. 09Add only clearly earned bonuses.
  10. 10Record every pitch for pitcher workload.
  11. 11No short-AB hitter bonus exists.
  12. 12Announce scoring definitions before the session.
  13. 13Do not change scoring values mid-session.
  14. 14Correct errors visibly.
  15. 15Printed and digital Team Kit scoring use the same rules.

Score the result, not the reputation of the player.

Digital scoring notes
  • The Dugout scoring engine also records a called (looking) strikeout as -3 for the hitter, while printed Team Kit scoring records all strikeouts as 0.
  • The Dugout scoring engine also awards a +5 Three-Pitch Efficiency Bonus to the pitcher when the hitter is retired in three pitches or fewer. This bonus is not part of the printed Team Kit matrix.
  • Bunt phase and First-Pitch Strike behaviour in The Dugout are profile-driven per session and can be turned off by session configuration.
How Scoring Works

How a Team Kit AB is scored.

Four steps, every at-bat, printed or digital.

  1. STEP 1

    Pre-AB Bunt

One bunt attempt. Successful bunt = +2 hitter. Pitch counts toward workload only.

  2. STEP 2

    Competitive Pitch Sequence

The count begins. First competitive pitch determines First-Pitch Strike.

  3. STEP 3

    Terminal Outcome

One outcome per AB for the hitter, one for the pitcher.

  4. STEP 4

    Applicable Bonuses

    Add only clearly earned bonuses.

Example 1 — Hard Hit on the First Competitive Pitch

Hitter
  • Successful Bunt: +2
  • Hard Hit: +6
Total: 8
Pitcher
  • First-Pitch Strike: +2
  • Hard Hit Allowed: -4
Total: -2

Example 2 — Swinging Strikeout

Hitter
  • Strikeout: 0
Total: 0
Pitcher
  • Strikeout: +10
  • Swing & Miss: +2 for each recorded event
  • First-Pitch Strike: +2 when earned

Example 3 — Walk

Hitter
  • Walk: +3
Total: 3
Pitcher
  • BB Allowed: -1
  • Other earned pitch-level points remain recorded

The final pitcher total depends on the pitch events recorded during the AB.

Official Scoring

Official LIVE AB Scoring

Applies to managed LIVE AB sessions, approved partner programs, and official LIVE AB events.

Official scoring may differ from Team Kit Practice Scoring. Always use the published rules for the managed session, partner program, or event being operated.
Official scoring notice

LIVE AB does not operate a single universal official scoring matrix. Official rules are published for the applicable managed session, program, or event. The configurations below are the official scoring sets currently published.

  • Official event scoring is operated by LIVE AB officials, not by team coaches.
  • Each LIVE AB has a 2-minute target pace and a 3-minute hard cap.
  • Each LIVE AB may also be capped by pitch count.
  • Official scoring may change by program, competition type, or published scoring version.
Scoring system notes
  • No separate official scoring engine exists in production today. Managed LIVE AB sessions scored through The Dugout currently run the same engine constants as Team Kit practice sessions (src/lib/scoring/points.ts).
  • Published Festival scoring does not list a walk penalty for the pitcher; the production engine records -1 for a walk.
  • Published Festival scoring does not list a First-Pitch Strike bonus or a Three-Pitch Efficiency bonus; the production engine records +2 and +5 respectively.
Scorecards And Records

The scoreboard may be
  • Handwritten
  • Dry-erase
  • Printed
  • Shown on a laptop or tablet
  • Displayed through The Dugout
  • Mirrored to a television
Display
  • Current hitter
  • Current pitcher
  • Count
  • Recent result
  • Current totals
  • Leaders where supported

The scoreboard may be manual. The competition must still be visible.

Verification Levels

Not every record is the same record.

Self-Reported

Submitted without independent scoring verification.

Coach-Recorded

Submitted by an outside coach or organizer running a Team Kit session.

Partner-Verified

Recorded through an approved partner process.

Official LIVE AB

Recorded through an approved managed LIVE AB session or event process.

These record types remain distinguishable and must not be merged into one undifferentiated ranking.

This is today's scoreboard, not a permanent ranking.

Scoring FAQ

Questions coaches and families ask.

Is The Dugout required?

No. The Team Kit scoring system works completely with printed scorecards, a Session Sheet, timer, and manual scoreboard.

Are Team Kit scores official LIVE AB event scores?

No. Team Kit private-session results are coach-recorded unless produced through an approved official or partner process.

Can scoring change?

Official scoring may change by program, competition, or event version. Team Kit Practice Scoring changes only when LIVE AB intentionally issues an updated Team Kit scoring version.

Can coaches customize practice scoring?

A coach may modify a private practice goal only when the change is announced before the session and applied consistently. Modified scores must not be presented as official LIVE AB scoring.

Is one session a permanent ranking?

No. This is today's scoreboard, not a permanent ranking.

What happens if the technology fails?

Continue with printed scorecards and reconcile the digital record later. Do not replay completed ABs solely because the technology failed.

Does every pitch count toward workload?

Yes. Record all live pitches, including the pre-AB bunt pitch.
